We understand that people are the foremost factor in the success of any public realm project and that the true success of any place is rarely dependent on how cool it looks, on how many water features it has, or how funky the lighting and furniture are. Although important, the true success of a space depends on return visits, on critical activation, on dynamic engagement. To be successful a place needs a unique energy all of its own.
LSA Design's forerunner, Loci Studio, contributed greatly to the quality of landscape architecture and design, especially in its early work in China. Here is one of its first projects, published on World Landscape Architect in 2010. The design was led by Marc Deuschle, with Astrid Brokamp a core team member - they are now LSA Design's Principal and senior LA respectively.
LSA Design's Principal Marc is back at UNSW, convening the second year landscape studio 'Landform + Planting.' The course will focus on two projects:
The New Sports + Performance Paradigm Queens Park, and
The Urban Heat Island Clovelly Beach (see thermal image; source: SMH 11/02/2017).
Marc is very excited about teaching the fundamentals of the design process to the students and giving them an insight into modelling and graphic techniques.
Thanks to the strong support of the P+C Association, the lower playground of Erskineville Public School is now under construction. Progress has been great due to numerous selfless volunteers who gave up their time alongside LSA Design's team to get everything ready for the new school year.
See photos of the finished lower playground here.
Congratulations to Marc Deuschle who was appointed late last year as a member of the Wollongong Design Review Panel. As part of the panel he joins other design leaders in their respective fields, providing independent expert advice on development applications both pre- and post-lodgement. Improving the design quality of developments in Wollongong's city centre and at key sites is the driving force behind the panel.
It was our great honour to welcome a delegation from Xiangcheng District, Suzhou, China into our office. The representatives of Xiangcheng's construction industry and local government officials were keen to hear about our experience in urban construction and management. After a short presentation of our work Marc Deuschle organised a tour of Sydney's landmark open spaces.
See one of our projects in Suzhou here.
Before starting LSA Design Marc successfully ran Loci Studio. Loci Studio contributed greatly to the quality of landscape architecture and design. Here is one project, published on World Landscape Architect, that was undertaken in China during that time.
LSA Design has been supporting Erskineville Public School in Sydney's Inner West re-envisage its grounds and spaces. Recently the P+C pursued and won a $30,000.00 state government grant to fund an upgrade of the school's grounds. Lsa Design was instrumental in putting together both the grant proposal and the design report which ultimately won the grant committee over.
Conceived over a solid masterplan, the highlights of the scheme are a series of 'Imagination Pods' that are strategically placed throughout the grounds. These pods, derived from the students' own drawings and ideas, include an outdoor chess board, a digging patch, several floating decks, chalkboards, seats, climbing and balancing structures, and interesting earth sculpting.
The granted funds will be matched in kind by time donated by the P+C and parents. The project will commence in 2016 and we hope to see the first pods completed by the end of term 1. Watch this space...
Funmix Shopping Mall has just been featured on the World Landscape Architecture website. It has been extremely successful and very well received by locals since its opening early in 2015.
Last weekend Marc Deuschle joined Katy Svalbe and Melissa Wilson for the Sydney Architecture Festival's 'Meet a Landscape Architect.'
Members of the general public were able to get free design advice about any issues they had regarding their gardens, local parks or anything else landscape related.
LSA Design's Marc Deuschle led the team that designed a bold roof garden design for Vanke's Funmix shopping centre in Beijing while heading up his previous company Loci Studio. World Landscape Architect Website featured the work. When Marc started LSA Design the client asked that they help Vanke fulfil the original bold vision within a revised budget and scope. The completed project can be seen by clicking on the following link...
Metcash have recently moved to their new premises and the roof garden is open and complete. We recently went out to there (just before all staff would move into the space) to check it out and got some photos. We look forward to going back and seeing how people actually use the space.
LSA Design recently joined forces with JWDA Architects (Shanghai, China) to reinvigorate a run-down, neglected part of Guiyang City, China. The team created a model for urban renewal based on improvement and re-imagination of the existing environment as opposed to focusing on eradication, demolition and replacement
