erskineville Public - infant playground
Australian Institute of Landscape Architects NSW - Landscape Architecture Award 2021
Sydney, Australia
Acknowledged as one of the highest-achieving primary schools in NSW, the quality of Erskineville Public School’s grounds does not match the achievements of its students.
The P+C Association facilitated the conception of a masterplan for the grounds with a specific focus on the lower playground.
Several existing features, like a new hall built at its northern edge, a deceptively steep sloped lawn, and existing trees to its perimeter, need to be incorporated into the design of the lower playground. Most importantly, the scheme has to take into account that the majority of work is to be carried out by parents.
Simple, robust elements are introduced to structure the landscape and give opportunities for informal seating, outdoor teaching as well as active play.
As the project is funded by parent donations, the concept devised various ways to give a sense of ownership to those that contribute to the project.
