The Place, Ashfield

Ashfield, Australia

YTO Construction

Paying hommage to Mark John Hammond, Ashfield’s Mayor in 1882 and discoverer of the world’s largest reef gold nugget ten years earlier, The Place is a destinational plaza complementing a string of public domain works stretching from Ashfield Station to the Council offices.

Forming both a valuable public space and the entry plaza to the multi-storey mixed-use development by the same name, The Place boasts a sculptural artwork on the western side of the space honouring Hammond’s achievements as well as celebrating Ashfield’s rich heritage of brick buildings.

A cluster of large palms provides a sense of scale against the built form and offers an informal ceiling and dappled shade to the space. Floating in a line around and above the space, a lush green wall highlights the building facade, further drawing the eye upwards, as it edges the green ceiling.

Artistic concrete and timber seat pods are scattered throughout the plaza, inviting residents and visitors alike to linger and enjoy the space. They allow casual meeting, eating and small event opportunities for adjacent restaurants and shops.
